Weekend Escape: What Happened on My Short Getaway

Hello lovelies, I enjoyed a refreshing weekend getaway. I attended a wonderful, life-changing conference designed for moms. Traveling to another city just an hour away and connecting with over 2,500 mothers felt incredible. Mr. N. kindly cared for the girls while I was gone, and that made it possible for me to be fully present. It truly was a special experience. Here’s a picture I took in the conference hall:

The conference was organized by Hearts at Home under the leadership of Jill Savage and this year’s theme was “Unleash Your Superpower.” The event ran Friday and Saturday. Friday was Mom’s Night Out, where I heard one of the funniest speakers I’ve ever experienced, Ken Davis. He had the audience laughing until we cried. Ken is a Christian comedian who reminded us that Christians should radiate joy rather than carry stern, serious faces—his playful suggestion was to “send missionaries to our faces.”

Saturday was the main conference with several workshops. Here are key takeaways I found most meaningful:

  • Speak your children’s love languages. Dr. Gary Chapman, author of The 5 Love Languages, emphasized the importance of using the specific ways your children feel loved.
  • Happiness is a skill worth cultivating and practicing.
  • Connect with your kids in a wireless world by setting aside phones, tablets and TVs and simply talking with them.
  • A difficult moment doesn’t make you a bad mother.
  • To unleash your superpower, stay connected to your power source—God. Relying only on yourself will lead to burnout.

What struck me most was the warmth and accessibility of the speakers. I was thrilled to see Dr. Gary Chapman in person after reading his book years ago. After his session he was available at the book table to meet attendees, sign books and chat—no protocol or barriers. That openness was consistent across speakers, and the conference even encouraged us to approach and speak with presenters we admired.

The venue was filled with delightful signage and sayings. With so many moms attending, getting to the restroom sometimes involved a line—an amusing reminder of how many of us were gathered together. At the entrance to each restroom stood a pretty sign with a friendly message:

I captured several other favorite signs and moments during the conference:

In the restroom I even found a humorous notice on the door that made me laugh—little touches like that added personality to the event:

Here’s a photo of my lovely group who attended the conference with me. We had a great time together, sharing stories and encouraging one another.

My ‘heroes’ are showing the effects of my cold-turkey weaning so I could attend the conference. I had to do it, and surprisingly she has been doing better since. That tummy is motivating me—watch for my 30-day smoothie challenge as I work toward shedding excess weight. I cherish these ladies; spending time with them and hearing their encouragement was uplifting.

On Sunday my eldest sang at her school service—she was amazing. After that we attended our church where the message encouraged us to seize every opportunity to do good, especially among fellow believers. I want to be a blessing to others and to let God’s love show through a godly and caring attitude. This week I’m feeling closer to God and trying to follow the Spirit’s leading in each step I take.

I hope you had a wonderful week and that this post inspires you in some way. Thank you for reading! Kisses.
