How to Regain Motivation When You’re Feeling Low

I opened my laptop intending to write a new post, but I sat there staring at the screen. My mind felt blocked and my words wouldn’t come. I had a few ideas for the blog, yet my brain felt numb — this was the worst writer’s block I’d ever experienced.

I wanted to keep going, but I couldn’t. I felt heavy, as if tied down by some invisible force. I wanted to do nothing at all.

All I wanted was to go to my bedroom, close the door, and lie down.

But my to-do list waited. The list was long: homeschooling the kids, cooking dinner, testing recipes, filming videos, decluttering, folding laundry, doing the dishes — and on and on.

The more I looked around the house at the mess, the clothes scattered everywhere, crumbs on the kitchen floor, and things left out of place, the more miserable I felt.

Will I ever get all this done? Will I ever have a stable life? Maybe I should just walk away and run!

These miserable moments happen. Life can be rosy and calm sometimes, but other times it feels suffocating. You doubt yourself, lose inspiration, and feel unable to move. When life throws multiple challenges at you, motivation can feel distant.

So how do you get your motivation back? How do you keep going when the odds are stacked against you? How do you pick yourself up and move forward?

Having faced lack of inspiration and low motivation many times, I want to share a few things that have helped me. I’m not always perfectly motivated — does that even exist? — but here’s how this mom regains her momentum despite the surrounding mess.

1. Rest

Rest is essential. If you don’t rest, you’ll break. Continuous hard work without pauses will drain you and leave you unwilling to do anything. Take breaks and give yourself permission to recharge.

2. Think positively

Your thoughts are powerful. What you think shapes who you become. If you constantly tell yourself you can’t, you’ll reinforce that belief. Choose positive thoughts about your goals and your abilities — that shift can change how you act and how you feel.

3. Podcasts

Podcasts can be a lifeline. I listen to episodes about life, blogging, and people’s journeys — their stories inspire and encourage me. I use a podcast app to follow my favorites and often find motivation from hearing how others overcome challenges.

4. Surround yourself with inspiration

The company you keep and the content you consume matter. Surround yourself with people who are proactive and driven. If you’re around negativity or constant pessimism, it will weigh you down. Choose friends, books, videos, and resources that uplift and encourage action.

5. Talk to someone

Sharing your struggles with a trusted friend or partner can help. Voicing what you’re feeling often brings relief and new perspective. You don’t have to carry everything alone.

6. Pray

For me, prayer brings renewed strength. Connecting with God stirs my spirit and encourages me to face the day with purpose. If spirituality is meaningful to you, leaning into it can provide comfort and motivation.

Remember, you won’t always get everything done, and that’s okay. You can still wake up and face life with determination, a positive attitude, and a readiness to act. You can live fully in the way you believe is right.
