Contemporary beer & brats hall. German beer hall serving schnitzel, brats & brews via dirndl-wearing waitresses.
Food was incredible, the establishment was much nicer than its South St designation would lead me to believe. Our group had an amazing time overall. However, there were only two servers and ours couldn't remember whose drinks were whose etc. Still only one star off since everything else was great and we'll definitely be back.
Schnitzel was good. Batter could have been seasoned better. I wished instead of fries they would have spatzle instead. The potato pancakes were very good. My wife had the sauerbraten and said it was good. Server was excellent. Be forewarned they add 18% gratuity.
One of my favorite places in Philly! Top notch and highly authentic German Biergarten. The beers, food, and atmosphere are excellent . Also a great place to watch soccer today is World Cup 2022 Argentina vs France! Cheers ????⚽️?
This place is full of the best surprises. We were having people visiting and knew we needed a bigger restaurant to accommodate. Brauhaus Schmitz came to mind and they took our reservation. I knew it was big on the inside, but then we were walked to a massive area. Honestly had no idea we were in a Philly restaurant anymore. The beers were great, the cheese sausage is one of the best I've ever tasted and our server was an absolute delight.
Not great. The best parts of this location are the beer and the atmosphere. The beer selection is top notch and I am glad they only purchase the beer and they don't make it themselves; because of they did, it would be poor. I ordered the chicken schnitzel and it is not what schnitzel is supposed to be. This came out thick and burned to a crisp. Schnitzel is supposed to be pounded thin and not burned to a crisp. It was actually funny because my friend ordered the same thing and the server came out and said his was "a little too crisp to serve" which had me baffled because they served everyone else black crust. The flavors of the food was ok but they coat their fries in some blend of spices which is very powerful. Overall the food did not feel authentic German and was a total disappointment. Additionally the prices are astronomical for what you get. We paid $146.50 for 4 people ordering off the lunch menu. They also include an automatic 18% gratuity which they did point out and was fine. I suggest staying away from this place and dining elsewhere.
Overall, a bit disappointed! Great beer selection nice ambiance, friendly staff. We weren't in a rush, but everything took a really long time. In addition, the food I had was not that great. I grew up in Germany and have an idea what authentic German food tastes like. While I do understand that the same food is prepared different depending on the region in Germany, and I also know some restaurants in Germany have terrible food too. For my Bavarian taste buds, the food at Brauhaus Schmitz was not that great. The food took forever. We were a bigger group (8) sitting in the back room which was almost empty. I guess this is a thing now, but I don't like having to scan the QR code to look at the menu, especially if you have a bad cellphone reception. Maybe they should offer WiFi (maybe they do. I didn't ask). The server did offer paper menus but were only able to provide 2 for the table of 8. It took us about 30 minutes until we all had ordered our food. The drinks were brought out pretty fast, but I think the food took about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes after we had ordered it. After we finished eating, the plates were cleared, and we declined the desert. We would have expected that they bring out the check/bill like they normally do in a restaurant in the U.S., but after a while I had to ask for it. Even then it took about 20 minutes to come out (at that time they really weren't that busy anymore) They also had already added the tip to the bill, and I'm glad the waiter pointed it out. I know this is common at other restaurants as well for larger groups. Overall rating: Ambience 4/5 stars, for making the outdoor seating on a busy street look like a beer garden. Indoors was nice too. Nice decoration, not too much/too little, etc. However, I would have expected some German music. I didn't pay tharuchbattention to it at first, but later noticed that they were playing some spanish music. Beer quality and selection 5/5 stars Food 2/5 stars I had Sauerbraten with blue cabbage and small "potato dumplings" or whatever that was supposed to be. The gravy was about 3.5/5 stars and was the best out of everything else on that plate. The meat was thinly sliced and dry (and I usually like the meat well done, but this was just dry). Blue cabbage was ok. A little bit on the bitter side, possible overcooked. The so called potato dumpling were just terrible! Those were not potato dumplings, I think this was just mashed potatoes scooped out with an ice cream scoop and sat too long under a heating lamp. This was a joke! I definitely know what not to order next time. I'm hoping that they just had a bad or or something, and it won't be as bad next time. I will just order something else. We also had Kartoffelpuffer. I would say 4/5 stars. A little bit too thick, but I know some regions in Germany make them like this too. Summarized rating of all 2.5-3 out of 5 stars
If you like German beer and beer hall atmosphere, this is the place. However, we were mightily disappointed with the food. We enjoyed the Schweinshaxe with the flambe option, made the skin crackled, the warm pretzel with brown mustard. The potato pancakes with apple sauce, and the bratwurst, not so much. The biggest disappointment was the wurst, they were so dried, they tasted very similar to some "slim jim". The accompanied red sauerkraut was so "vinegarly", borderline to bitter. I do not recall having wurst and kraut like this in Germany. We like the atmosphere, and the beer selection. Will come back some time in the future, but this is not a place that we would go to often. Service was great. Our waiter did a fine job serving us. 18 percent tip was added to our bill, very "un-germanly", you might say. Tips indicate something extra, dispensed by customers for good service and done so voluntarily. If restaurant put it on the bill without customer's consent, it should put down as "service".
Lovely authentic feel with the decor and the food unfortunately didn't get to try any of the beer as I was on antibiotics at the time but we did try a lovely apple soda and hubby and I had a lovely anniversary dinner and look forward to returning didn't realize they had this outdoor enclosed dining area you can see behind us because by the time we got to this restaurant we were so tired with the lack there of nice dining places on south street we missed it until we were on our way out but I look forward to coming back not just with him but with my bestie at some point too
