Exclusive 12-seat eatery. Tiny, tough-to-reserve eatery via David Chang offering multicourse, Asian-accented American meals.
Service was good. Very friendly and engaging staff. Food just wasn’t comparable with my palette. That said, I 100% do recommend this restaurant.
Mixed feelings about this place. I love Dave Chang and have been "following" him for years either through encounters with Bourdain or on his podcast. The place is stunning, from the moment you walk into a smaller-than-usual room with a cozy vibe, to the uniquely lit bar seating with clever utensil drawers, and a small but carefully chosen menu that's hand-written in a day-by-day journal. Unfortunately, the food—while unique and creative—just didn't quite made us go "wow". Some dishes, like their highly-recommended "premium" soft-boiled egg with black caviar felt like a complete waste of money. The caviar has a very mild taste and it gets completely lost in a much stronger vinegar/pickled medley that's under the egg. The tiny potato chips were a much better part of that dish to pair with the egg. The burger with foie gras was quite nice, although my partner and I both agreed that foie taste was essentially lost in it. I enjoyed minimalism of it with just a thin layer of mustard but I felt there was something missing as I went through it bite by bite (sweetness? crunch?) Cold fried chicken was great, although some might be repulsed by it. The rice dish with hake was probably my favorite — simple, tasty, well balanced, and reasonably priced. Overall, I get that the place is positioning itself as a high end establishment but it definitely feels like it's trying too hard to fuse Dave's "food for the masses" concept with a luxe topping of caviar just for the sake of it.
I had an excellent meals at the Bar at Momofuku Ko. I left extremely full and thought the final bill was quite reasonable ($150 for 2). Cocktails - delicious, unique and flavorful Cold Fried Chicken - incredible - 4x fried - deliciously tender and surprisingly crunchy for being refrigerated Pork Shoulder - rich, salt and pepper crusted. Not recommended for someone who doesn’t enjoy rich and fatty pork dishes. Mustard pizza - subtle hint of mustard, went really well. Dough was inconsistently spread across the pan but all of the flavors were on point so I won’t ding them The burger - my personal favorite, so simple, yet so rich. At $9 this might be the best value item in all of NYC. I wouldn’t hate coming here just for this. It seems small but it plays heavy. After the long meal we were happy we chose to just split one. Great service as well. Will return. My overall recommendation is to go a la carte over the bar tasting menu.
Rating: 2.75-3/5 (Google seems to show this as a 5 star review sometimes), tasting menu with wine pairings started off well, then were okay with a couple decent plates. The dessert plates and pairings were just bad, I wish there was one good dessert instead of three mediocre to bad ones and more savoury. Until the dessert I was hungry, then I just was ready to be done. Went with friends who said it had been one of their favorite meals in NYC, but that this time everything was worse, service was bland and forgot a few things, the pairings were just wine no other drinks, and the food was okay with a couple great bites. I wonder if they have had a lot of turnover and don't have an experienced palate on the line to check the balance of flavors--each dish was decently conceived but often executed such that it was overwhelmed by one element.
Great food and place but a little over priced. Food - omakase (chef's choice) all was wonderful. They made adjustment for us since we don't like lamb and gave us roasted duck. 11 course meal. I took pictures of menu and posted. The course were interesting, but some seemed less substantial like the carrot course. To call them courses is generous. It's really more of a tasting. Ambiance - trendy hip. Typical toooooo loud music that the server could not hear our drink order while standing right next to us. Decor is contemporary and done well. Dark settng. Cost - expensive. You do get a glass of wine or champagne and a little to go present to ease the pain. Sparkling water also comes with the meal with no extra charge. Service - wonderful service. They pace the food service just right so you have time to enjoy each course. We arrived early and they promptly
I wish I could rate it 6 out of 5. The food was exquisite and the experience was one of a kind. Great flavors and combinations
Ate at bar seating. Wonderful vibe/decor, excellent service, and the food was spectacular. Ate: Cold fried chicken (w/ ranch) Mustard pizza Pickle sandwich Pickle plate Burger (w/ fois) Drank: Dirty martinis Old fashioned The old fashioned was the only thing I would skip (the “funky” flavor just didn’t work imo). Otherwise, the fried chicken *cannot* be missed (don’t forget the ranch!), the pizza is completely delicious, and the burger is a rich compliment to otherwise many acidic-styled flavors. The fois didn’t add much to the party (especially at the same price as the burger), so I could skip that. A perfect Friday evening spot. Would love to return to do the full experience.
Tasting menu here was amazing. Every dish was so wonderful. Favorites included the fried chicken with caviar (actually had to order another portion a la Carte because it was so good), the mushroom amuse Bouche, the scallop, dry aged sirloin with onion soufflé, and the lemon tart. Also their panyan milk punch cocktail was so light and tasty and their sesame Negroni was prob the best cocktail I’ve ever had (not too sweet). Would love to come back here!!
