MY NATURAL HAIR JOURNEY

Keeping our natural hair is one of the most difficult things we have ever done. We went completely natural, two years ago. To tell you the truth, we're still trying to understand how to care for our hair. Some days, we just want to rush to the store and buy perm to put on our hair. On other days, we want to show the whole world how beautiful our hair looks. Some days we question our sanity. We mean, why does anyone choose to keep such tough hair when there are other options? Then some days, we thank God for giving us such unique hair that is full of character. Let us take on our journey. We cut our hair for the first time since high school, shortly after we moved to the United States. The braids we had on took away our baby hair and left us with mbamba (no baby hair). So we asked our nephew to chop off our hair because we wanted our hair to grow evenly. We didn’t want to look like a peacock with no hair at the front and long hair in the middle. Our nephew chopped our hair but he didn’t completely take out the relaxed section as we requested. This is us rocking our short hair.
After some months, we decided to cut our hair even lower so we could get rid of all relaxed hair. We went to a barber’s chop and the white lady who gave us the haircut struggled because she said, our hair was too thick and curly. She had to leave instructions in the computer to help anyone who had to handle our hair in case we showed up again. Here is what we looked like after that. The our hair grew in wisdom and stature and in favour with our mirror and hair products. Then we watched 1756 YouTube videos and started trying to style our hair. Here is one of our attempts: a fro puff.
As the hair kept growing, our combs and hair ties started breaking. Meme from SOML Facebook We Kid.But believe us when we say it became so difficult to handle. Some days, we would just leave our hair entangled and totally unappealing to the eyes. We were gradually becoming a sane mad woman. Our girls noticed and one morning, girl number one said our hair was not beautiful and she sent her sister to get hair accessories so they could fix it. This is what they did. Then we woke up one morning and declared it wash day… Meme from SOML Facebook Okay, we didn’t use all of the above products but we used quite a few. We partitioned our hair into sections to make it easier to wash. We washed and styled following a YouTube video we had watched. Yay for YouTube natural hair vloggers! Here are the pics we took on that day: Then our brothers and sisters, we decided to do a bantu knot out after our hair had grown longer. The curls weren’t as defined as we expected but we were proud of myself and our kinky hair. Here is another pic we took on the same day.So far, our go-to style has been to make an attempt at combing our hair then putting it together in a high puff and laying the edges with some gel.Extra virgin coconut oil and water are our hair’s best friends. This is what our hair looks like today. It is much longer than it looks but with natural hair, shrinkage is real. Meme from SOML, Facebook And that, our friends is the story of our natural hair. We'll keep feeding it with coconut oil and water and keep trying new styles. Do you know what else we could do with our natural hair? Please let us know below.“And isn’t long hair a woman’s pride and joy? For it has been given to her as a covering.”
