Oh. My. Goodness. I think I have a new favorite ? place to eat. I have always been curious about Puerto Rican food. I have tried it once in Colorado and it wasn't enough where it captured my taste buds. I think knowing what to order helps with the introduction. This place used to be Crazy Jim's and now it's Phoenix Coqui (pronounced co-key). They close at 645 pm and we arrived at 635 pm. They welcomed us and we ordered our food. They didn't mind us eating in while they were closing up. Phoenix Coqui had a food truck for 5 years and now they have a permanent location. I am so thrilled for them. They mentioned that people come from Tucson and Yuma just to eat Pasteleon. I have never heard of them before and I am so happy to meet them at this location. We had friendly service and the food was flavorful, delicious and it smelled amazing. The place is tiny, cozy and inviting. The decor is cute ?. We definitely will be returning in the near future. We ordered pasteleon (lasagna dish that is made with plantain, beef and cheese) and Pollo a la criolla (stewed chicken in tomatoe broth) with salad, rice and beans. Happy eating ?.
Food was authentic. I am from PR. Meaning I used to live there and I can honestly say this place hit the spot. 4 stars cuz it was hard to get to the parking area and cuz it is very congested part of town. The food, was excellent (5 stars). I had the mofongo with pork and I shared it with my wife. It wasnt a huge portion, but mofongo is very calorie dense, add the pork and now you are stepping into the danger zone for wieght watching. You know the drill. Atmosphere and decor was very Puerto Rican as well. Good salsa music. Made me feel as if I time traveled.
I loved the food truck and had been wanting to checkout the restaurant since it opened. Glad I finally did and ended up ordering half the menu with the family. I was brave enough to take my kids, who are picky eaters, and they enjoyed the empanadas de carne y pizza. I had the pastelon de plátano and it's such a big and filling portion and yummy of course. The carnitas and Pernil both pretty great. Very authentic food made my diaspora boricua heart full.
I’ve been looking for puertorrican food here in Phoenix and wasn’t Able to find any. I was told about this place and honestly I didn’t have much expectations since there is not a big culture here for our food. I have to say I was greatly impressed with the food!! I had the pastelon de amarillo with arroz con gandules and a side of tostones. It was absolutely delicious!! All I have to say is… la cocina es como la casa de abuela!!! Sigan pa’ alante mis gallitos!!!
I am going to be very short and to the point with this review! 1. Food F*cking perfect 10! 2. Location 7! 3. staff 10 4 interior 9 Their beans could be better !
I’ve been craving pastelon for quite some time, so when I found this place online, I had to try… So good!!! Plus, the arroz con gandules was flavorful and the alcapurria was perfectly cooked.
I love the food. Moved here from NYC, and my background being Puerto Rican, this is by far some of the best food I have had. Definitely takes likes food from back home. Plus the owners are absolutely fantastic. You will be seeing more of me.
