Modern outpost for diverse daytime fare. Hip cafe features global-inspired breakfast & lunch fare with housemade jams in a minimalist space.
As they brought out my Salmon Sorrel Rice breakfast, I could smell the fresh ingredients. The taste was amazing. The mix of tastes - salmon, feta, brocollini, rice - was prepared to perfection. We also got Brioche with 3 daily jams. Sweet and heavenly. The staff was great, friendly, welcoming. We will definitely be back. By the way, their market next door has fun stuff.
Service was pretty abysmal, unfortunately. We ordered to go and ended up waiting 50 minutes to get our order. In my opinion, customers should be told when it'll take a long-time for the order to be ready. We asked for an update about 35 minutes in and we're simply told, it's just coming out now. There's no way our order took 15 minutes to make. We would have preferred honesty. When the food was brought to us, the bag felt quite light and thankfully I checked. It turns out our Avocado Toast was missing. I had to go find a staff member and said they would take care of it right away. Fast forward another 10 minutes and our order was brought to us again. Nobody apologized or made any effort to right the wrong. The Rainbow Ricotta Toast was delicious but definitely not worth the wait. The Avocado Toast that Sqirl would have forgotten to serve me was also solid but didn't have much Avocado (despite the menu stating "now with more avocado"). It really seems that Sqirl has been overrun because of its trendy status and is suffering from the volume of orders they have to serve. Would love for them to show me they care and prove me wrong.
The food photos looked amazing and the menu was extensive but it was a little too big and overwhelming for someone who came hungry. So I guess that could be a pro or a con. Everything sounded so good. We settled on the buckwheat pancake, the ricotta toast to share, and had the Sorrell rice bowl and crispy fried rice and the hash. They were all good overall and definitely had flavor and a unique touch to it but it was a bit on the pricier side for the portion sizes, also the rice bowls were a bit on the saltier side. The pancake was good, but pricy for just that one. The hash was also good but not out of the ball park to the point we’d say it’s 5 stars. All the food tasted good, but it wasn’t amazing. I wouldn’t say this place is a must visit — so hence the three stars, if you have interest going somewhere else I’d recommend going some where else. But if you’re looking for a cafe for a quick lunch and don’t care about the experience of the dine in, this would be a good option. The seating was also limited. Parking can be tricky.
Incredible breakfast food for vegans and meat eaters alike. For a savory breakfast you can’t go wrong with one of their bowls. If you’re into sweet breakfast and haven’t been before, you should get the classic ricotta toast with their homemade jam. If you want to be extra fancy you can get it “rainbow” and pick 3 of any of their freshly made jams to adorn your hearty slab of brioche toast. Their lattes are very good as well, however, if you get the bakers latte you have to drink it fast or else all the ghee kindof pools at the top which isn’t so pleasant. I will definitely be back - this is one of my go to spots for a coffee catchup or for visitors. Just to note, most of the seating is outdoors so if it’s wintertime bring a jacket.
Sorrel Pesto Rice Bowl / brown rice, sorrel pesto, preserved lemon, hot sauce, watermelon radish, sheep feta, poached egg - 5 ?! Brioche toast with rainbow jam spread - 5 ?! Sqrl is a hip, fun brunch style place in a little area on Vermont Ave with other trendy spots close by. Like the ramen and bagel place, they always are busy. I finally had my chance to stop by, and I was very happy with my experience. Their sorrel pesto bowl is their most popular item, and that was what I tried. And I get why it is so popular. It is so so good! I was blown away by the taste and quality of each ingredient and was very happy with the dish. I wasn't sure when I'd get back again and wanted to try the jams. I was having trouble deciding, so the counter lady let me know they offer a rainbow spread just for people like me who can't just choose one. Sadly, I forgot which four were offered, but I remember really liking all four. Sqrl is a great spot for locals or for foodies who want to explore all that LA has to offer. The parking is a bit tricky and the line can get long but it is worth it.
I didn’t know what to order, and the server told me they were most famous for their ricotta toast and jam so that’s what I ordered. I got all four of the daily jams, which I think were boysenberry, apricot, passionfruit and strawberry rose. Amazing I was able to eat half in the restaurant and took half home for later.
Huge amount of menu options and they all seem delicious! Great drip coffee too! They are usually busy. Tables located outside some space inside. Some people do bring laptops for work. Recommend this place for some fresh, quality, tasty food.
Visited twice and both times were very pleasant experience! The stuffed French toast is amazing!! It's warm and soft inside, but a little crispy on the outside. Their jam makes the flavor reallyyyy good. It's the best French toast I've ever had in my life (seriously??) Make sure you try it when coming here! The salmon sorrel rice with kale is great, too. The lemon and cheese make the flavor rich and special. The portion of their meals are also very appropriate. Avocado toast was also different than others' avocado toast. I love their creativity and how well they are when mixing different ingredients together, which makes their dishes unique and delicious. Coffee is okay though, I probably won't order their coffee next time. Staffs are friendly. You order at the counter and then find your table to seat. Overall: highly recommend to everyone! ?
