Street food–style Chinese dining. Roast pork is the specialty at this casual Chinese restaurant for street-style food.
What can I say about a place like Wah Fung? It is the quintessential Chinatown visit if you are visiting from out of town. They have the best Chinese BBQ pork I have had in a very long time. There is a queue to order your food, but the line usually moves fairly fast. It is cash only from what I experienced, but the meal is so cheap, and to be honest, even if they were to charge me 50% more, I still feel like it would have been worth it. There is no dining area, but the park is right across the street if you are looking for a place to sit and enjoy.
Amazing roasted meats but the pork was the star. The chicken was good but pork packed more flavor. Plus, the steamed cabbage and rice drizzled with the meat juices paired well with the meat. There was a line around 4pm, but it moved fairly quickly. For a price of $11, you can get two small containers and be satisfied. I forgot to take a picture of the food because of hunger and excitement ?. Now I know what the hype is about this place and I agree that it is worth a try and to keep coming back for.
Nothing really to say besides this is my go to spot for Cantonese BBQ. Everyone in NYC knows this is the best cheap eats spot if you want a quick bite. Luckily the lines haven’t been too long lately but the food comes out super fast anyways so you won’t be in time for too long. I would definitely recommend getting the 3 meat combo so you get to try a variety of meats. 1000% would come back to this place.
I came on Wednesday, shortly after opening so I did not have to deal with long lines. 3 people were in front of me at 9:15AM and that was perfect! I got a few things for variety that could be reheated for different meals. I got the large chicken. You get a lot. It is juicy, and well flavoured. Large pork. A decent amount. Good flavour and a nice change. Large duck. Great flavour. However, my only complaint is, when looking through pictures I noticed in the combo meals that about the same amount of duck was in the combo as my large duck order. It had 6 slices. The picture I took makes it look like more, but it was just the angle. I am complaining because I paid $8 and the combo was the same price with practically same amount of duck, plus chicken. Maybe I am being petty but that is honestly my only complaint :) Also, if you are unfamiliar with duck, try it! It is not a “meaty” bird like chicken. Some parts have only a very thin layer of meat. The thickest part of chest might have 1cm (ish) of meat (not including what you might see with the breast bone etc) it is really full of flavour! Stronger than chicken, but in a good way! And a couple words on the cabbage! It is delicious! They retain a slight crunch to it. A nice texture change! Don’t forget to bring cash! And expect long wait time during peak hours! Hope this helps someone!
You'll probably encounter a long line when you arrive here. Rest assured, there is a line for a reason. My husband and I came on a Saturday afternoon around 3 and waited for around an hour. We got the Roasted Duck & Pork. It was absolutely fantastic. I think the duck was better than the pork so I would get all duck next time. I love that they put so much of the juice in it so the rice is really flavorful too. We ate ours at the park across the street. It's cash only so make sure you're prepared. This is one of my favorite things I've had in NYC!
Came and had the roast pork over rice. Amazing little shop, we queued for about 20 minutes. See the guys in action making up the food, take out and cash only, then ate in the park. Our portions were massive and tasted delicious, so much meat and an amazing sticky sauce. Will say however that it wasn’t quite as flavourful as the hype hence the 4 instead of the 5, but still a must try for Chinatown in NYC.
I'm sure the pandemic has taken a toll on Wah Fung in some way, but it's lost 2 stars from me on this visit. Last Sunday I got in line just as it opened the door at 9 am. I was the fifth in line. I noticed it was a lady instead of 2 men as I remembered manning the cutting board. And for 15 whole minutes she did not serve one single person, just keep cutting and moving meats. The line was like 12 people by now and everyone was really annoyed; me especially because my wife was waiting in the car which was in a "temporary" spot. When the line finally started moving, it was still much slower than I had remembered because it was now a one-man operation. I ended up spending 30 minutes waiting before I finally get to order my duck lunchboxes. In retrospect, I figured the man must have been late and the lady was just buying time help getting thing ready. In exchange for the long wait was not fruition but even more disappointments. The large size boxes that I ordered were now more like 90 part white rice, 5 part cabbage, and 5 part duck. And aside from the drum piece, the duck was essentially fat and bones, and it was not flavorful nor savory to go with any rice. In the end I'm left with a gross amount of rice with nothing to go with it. OK, the price may have only gone up by $1.25 but the quality and value had gone down the drain. If I do come back at all, the only thing I'll get would be the BBQ pork. At least it's boneless and it would go with rice much better than the pathetic duck they served me on this visit.
We visited at around 3 pm and the line took 30 minutes. It was worth the wait! I ordered the large chicken, pork, and duck with rice. If I was to visit again I’d order just the pork, as I thought it was the tastiest - but maybe order them all and decide for yourself? My girlfriend preferred the duck. Great food, and a value at only $8!
