Now that a new baby is on the way, I am so excited. One of my favorite parts of pregnancy is preparing for the arrival—scheduling doctor visits, researching online and shopping for baby items. I’m doing all of this for the fourth time and it still feels as special as my first pregnancy.
Below I’ve shared my personal preparing-for-baby checklist. I hope other expectant parents find these tips helpful. If you’re expecting, please share your ideas too!

Here’s how I’m getting ready for the new baby:
Doctor’s Visits
Scheduling regular doctor visits is one of the first steps I take. In the U.S., prenatal visits typically begin around 10 weeks. I love hearing the baby’s heartbeat and having a chance to discuss any questions with my OB/GYN. Prenatal appointments have always been reassuring—whether during antenatal classes back in Cameroon or now in routine checkups—and they calm many of the normal pregnancy worries.
Online Research
The internet is a huge help during pregnancy. I read a lot to track the baby’s development, confirm whether certain symptoms are normal, and learn from other parents’ experiences. Searching reputable sources gives me confidence and helps me make informed decisions throughout pregnancy.
Shopping
I enjoy shopping for baby items, and most of it happens in the second trimester when morning sickness subsides. I try not to wait until the third trimester so I don’t feel overwhelmed or too tired to shop. Online shopping is convenient for quick finds and larger purchases.
For basic essentials I focus on diapers, a few well-fitting outfits, gentle body lotion and soap, and a safe sleep space—such as a crib, bassinet or pack-and-play. Babies grow quickly, so I avoid buying too many clothes in the same size and instead pick a few key pieces in multiple sizes.
Baby Monitor
A reliable baby monitor is worth the investment. This time I’m excited to use a monitor that gives extra reassurance by letting me check on the baby from anywhere in the house, day or night.
The VTech VM4261 4.3” Digital Video Baby Monitor with Pan & Tilt Camera includes both a pan-and-tilt camera and a wide-angle lens, allowing a clear view of the nursery from different angles. It also features a microphone so you can talk to your baby, which helps soothe them with your voice.
The VM4261 works well throughout the different stages of infancy and is easy to set up. Even a non-technical person like me could assemble it in minutes by following the manual.

The Nursery
Deciding where the baby will sleep is an important step. You don’t need a dedicated room to create a nursery; a corner of the master bedroom works well, especially if you prefer the baby close by. I’ve placed cribs in a corner of my bedroom for that reason. For newborns, a bassinet is a practical option, or you can choose a pack-and-play if you prefer a portable sleep solution.
Creating a comfortable, safe and functional space is more important than having a whole room. Keep sleep items minimal, choose a firm mattress and fitted sheets, and ensure the monitor and any other equipment are positioned safely.
I hope these tips help you feel more prepared for your baby’s arrival. Enjoy every step of the pregnancy journey and celebrate the small moments along the way!
