Savory French Toast served with salad and ketchup.

I’ve been on a breakfast kick lately—after fried potatoes and eggs and a spaghetti omelette, I landed on this savory French toast. If you prefer a sweet version, a sourdough-style French toast works beautifully, but this recipe is intentionally unsweetened and full of egg flavor.

Savory French Toast Recipe

I love foods that are crisp outside and tender inside. This Savory French Toast brings back memories—my mother used to make it at home and we called it “toasted bread.” Years later a family friend called it “French toast,” and the name stuck. Essentially it’s a bread-and-egg sandwich fully merged into one delicious bite.

If you want a break from sugary breakfasts, this savory version is perfect. It’s straightforward, comforting, and quick to prepare.

Savory French Toast served with Ketchup

Serve with tea or coffee— in Cameroon, a typical tea might be Ovaltine with milk—or enjoy it with a smear of mayonnaise or a side of ketchup. The crunchy exterior and eggy interior are always a hit; my kids finish a batch in no time.

African breakfasts are often not overly sweet, which makes this milk-free French toast a natural fit. The egg coats the bread and adds wonderful flavor, while the exterior crisps to a golden brown. It’s tasty and so easy to make.

Best Bread For French Toast

Choose bread you enjoy on its own. I used regular sliced wheat bread here, but softer breads like challah or brioche also make excellent French toast if you prefer a richer, more tender result.

French Toast Without Milk

This recipe demonstrates that milk isn’t necessary. Eggs, salt, pepper and a little seasoning are all you need for a savory coating that creates that familiar French toast texture.

Ingredients

The recipe uses simple ingredients: bread, eggs, salt, pepper, optional parsley for color, and a little oil or butter for frying. Minimal ingredients, maximum flavor.

Ingredients

  • 8 bread slices
  • 5 eggs
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon white or black pepper
  • 2 sprigs parsley, chopped (optional)
  • 1-2 tablespoons oil

Instructions

  • Crack the eggs into a bowl. Add salt, pepper and chopped parsley if using, then beat well.
  • Heat a skillet over low heat and add about a teaspoon of oil, tilting the pan so it spreads. Heat the oil for about 2 minutes. Dip a slice of bread into the egg mixture, turning to coat both sides, and place it in the skillet. Repeat with another slice—cook on low for about 3–4 minutes per side until golden and crisp. Continue with the remaining bread.
  • Serve warm with ketchup, mayonnaise, tea or coffee.

Notes

Parsley adds a touch of color and freshness but is optional.
