Move over pumpkin spice—Banana Milk Coffee has arrived. This banana-flavored coffee is the cozy new favorite of the season, and for good reason.

Sweet, warming and comforting, it’s an ideal drink for crisp autumn mornings or any time you want a soothing cup. I still enjoy a pumpkin-spiced latte, but this banana version has quickly become my go-to “hug in a mug.”

The original version combines banana milk, a simple sugar syrup and cold brew poured over ice. That sounds delightful, but I prefer a warm take for cooler months. My recipe makes a hot banana milk that I pour over strong, freshly brewed coffee.

What You Need

  • Good quality coffee (freshly brewed and strong)
  • 1 very ripe banana
  • Milk (I used semi-skimmed)
  • Sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Optional: heatproof glasses or mugs for serving

How to Make Banana Milk Coffee

My warm version is rich and comforting. Start by mashing a very ripe banana with 1 tablespoon of sugar until mostly smooth. Transfer the mixture to a small saucepan and heat gently, stirring until the sugar dissolves and the banana mixture is warm.

Gradually add about half the milk to the saucepan while keeping the heat low until the mixture starts to steam. Remove from the heat and stir in 1 teaspoon of cinnamon. Pour the warm banana milk into a blender and blend until completely smooth, slowly adding the remaining milk to reach the desired consistency. A high-powered blender helps eliminate lumps.

Divide strong hot coffee between two large mugs (about 200ml / 6.7 fl oz each) and top with the banana milk. If you don’t have a powerful blender, strain the banana milk through a fine sieve while pouring to remove any lumps. Finish with an extra dusting of cinnamon if you like.

Autumn is the perfect time for this drink: crisp air, changing leaves and the return of jeans and cozy layers. Short walks with the dog, backyard barbecues while it’s still mild, and the pleasure of sipping a warm spiced coffee without overheating—this recipe fits right in.

This Banana Milk Coffee is quick and inexpensive—about five minutes to make and far cheaper than a café version. Try it at home and enjoy.

This Banana Milk Coffee is sweet, warming and delicious. It’s the perfect way to wake up on a chilly morning or relax and unwind throughout the day.

Ingredients

  • ~6.7 fluid ounces (200ml) coffee, freshly brewed, strong & hot
  • ~8.4 fluid ounces (250ml) milk (semi-skimmed suggested)
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 very ripe banana
  • 1 tsp cinnamon, plus extra for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  • Mash the banana in a bowl with the sugar until mostly smooth. Add to a saucepan over low heat and stir until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is hot.
  • Gradually add half the milk while it heats, then remove from the heat and stir in the cinnamon.
  • Blend the banana milk until completely smooth, gradually adding the remaining milk. Divide the hot coffee between two mugs and top with the banana milk. Use a sieve when pouring if you don’t have a high-power blender. Dust with extra cinnamon if desired.

Notes

Use a very ripe (almost black) banana for the best banana flavor.

If you lack a high-powered blender, strain the banana milk through a fine sieve when pouring to remove lumps.
