Watermelon and mango season is here, and I’m fully embracing it—grabbing watermelons and mangoes at every grocery trip and turning them into big bowls of fruit salad. This Cameroonian-style fruit salad is how I’ve always made it: simple, fresh, and bursting with flavor.

Sometimes I toss in six or seven different fruits—strawberries, grapes, honeydew, blueberries—whatever I have on hand. For this recipe I kept it authentic and minimal, using the five fruits I’d typically find in Cameroon: watermelon, mango, pineapple, apple, and papaya (here substituted with cantaloupe).

The salad is sweet, juicy, and refreshingly fruity. Below is a clear, easy-to-follow version of the recipe so you can make it at home.

8 servings
Ingredients
- 2 large mangoes
- 1 pineapple
- 1/8 watermelon
- 1 small papaya/pawpaw substitute with half a cantaloupe
- 2 apples I used Golden Delicious
- 1/2 lemon
Instructions
-
Peel the apples and dice them into roughly 1-inch cubes. Squeeze the lemon over the diced apples and toss so the lemon coats the pieces—this helps prevent browning.
-
Peel and dice the remaining fruits—mango, pineapple, papaya (or cantaloupe), and watermelon—into similar 1-inch pieces for a uniform texture.
-
Combine all the fruit in a large bowl and gently mix to combine. Chill in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes before serving so the flavors meld and the salad is refreshing.
Notes
For a sweeter dressing, mix in a little sugar or honey and a touch of lemon zest.
