Homemade Hot Cocoa
If you love hot chocolate, this recipe gives you that rich, chocolatey comfort without relying on heavy cream, condensed milk, or excessive sugar.
This Coconut Hot Chocolate uses coconut milk to create a luxuriously creamy texture that tastes indulgent but is made from fewer, cleaner ingredients. The blend of coconut and chocolate is wonderfully rich — a combination worth trying if you haven’t yet.
This recipe was created in collaboration with Hadiza of hadizafrench.com, who also shares her own hot chocolate variations.

The Ingredients
Just four main ingredients make this drink:
- Coconut milk: For the creamy base. Use refrigerated carton coconut milk for the best texture rather than canned coconut milk, which suits savory dishes better.
- Unsweetened cocoa powder: For the chocolate flavor.
- Honey: For sweetness. Agave, maple syrup, raw sugar or coconut sugar work too; for a low-carb option try monk fruit sweetener.
- Vanilla extract: Adds depth and aroma.

See the recipe card below for exact measurements and serving size.
How To Make Coconut Hot Chocolate
Preparing this drink is quick and straightforward.
- Start with cocoa powder and honey in a mug.

- Add two tablespoons of water and heat for 30 seconds in the microwave. Stir to make a smooth paste, dissolving the cocoa and honey.

- Stir in the coconut milk and a few drops of vanilla.
- Heat for another 1–2 minutes in the microwave, then stir and enjoy.

If you prefer not to use a microwave, warm the cocoa paste and coconut milk together in a small saucepan over medium-low heat, whisking until smooth and heated through. Do not boil; just bring to a gentle simmer before serving.

My daughter declared this “the best hot chocolate I ever had,” preferring it over pre-packaged mixes — a win in my book.
