Last weekend I used a grill for the first time in a proper way. Until now, my grilling experience was limited to a makeshift setup: my mother’s old pot filled with charcoal and a worn rack salvaged from our kitchen firewood. With that arrangement I used to grill fish for my siblings — those were the good old days.
Recently I went to a picnic celebrating the start of summer events for the Cameroonian community here. One man was in charge of grilling hot dogs but burned the first batch and was distracted, so he asked me to take over. I happily stepped in and spent the afternoon flipping hot dogs on the grill.
I loved the whole process — watching the hot dogs cook, turning them until they were just right, and seeing people line up to enjoy them. The experience convinced me to get a grill of my own. Once I do, I plan to make all the grillables: smoked fish, kati kati chicken, smoked meat, and more.
Aside from food and grilling, I’ve been thinking a lot about eternity lately. Reminding myself there’s life beyond the present helps shape how I live now. It makes it easier not to worry over things that are temporary.
How about you — how did last week go?
