Why I Love Being Cameroonian: 6 Things That Inspire Me

If I had the chance to be born seven times and choose my country each time, I would pick Cameroon every single time. Here’s why Cameroon holds my heart.

1. THE FOOD
Cameroonian food
Food comes first for me—not just because I’m an enthusiastic foodie, but because Cameroonian cuisine genuinely stands out. I’ve tasted many foods from around the world, yet few match the depth, texture and bold flavors found in Cameroon’s dishes. The creativity is remarkable: a single ingredient can yield many distinct meals. For example, egusi (melon seeds) is often used only in soups in some places, but in Cameroon it becomes egusi pudding, stewed greens, soups and even additions to porridges and stews. The cuisine is diverse, comforting and accessible, with options that appeal to a wide range of palates. I firmly believe the world should experience more of Cameroon’s culinary treasures.
2. THE LANGUAGES
Bilingualism in Cameroon
Cameroon’s bilingual nature is a real advantage. With both English and French as official languages, many people grow up exposed to both tongues. I came from an English-speaking region and only knew a little French at first, but school and everyday life pushed me to learn more. Today, having a working knowledge of both languages feels like a privilege and opens cultural and social doors that enrich life in Cameroon.

3. THE SCENERY

The landscapes are unforgettable.

There has to be a creator behind such beauty.

Cameroon truly is “Africa in miniature,” with a wide range of natural wonders packed into one country. The scenery here—from mountains to coastline—is visually stunning and endlessly rewarding to explore.
4. THE TOUCH OF NATURE

Beyond seeing nature, I love that you can physically feel it. I recall visits to villages where dirt roads and open spaces let you walk barefoot and connect with the earth. It might sound odd to some, but that tactile contact with nature feels therapeutic and grounding to me.

I mentioned in another piece how much I miss the everyday closeness to natural surroundings. That constant, gentle immersion in the outdoors is one of Cameroon’s quieter gifts.
5. NICE PLACES TO VISIT

Cameroon offers many wonderful destinations. Limbe Botanic Garden, for example, is among the continent’s older botanical gardens and worth visiting. Coastal towns like Limbe feature beaches where you can ride horses and enjoy freshly grilled fish right by the sea—simple pleasures that make visits memorable.

6. FOOTBALL
Even though I’m not an expert on football, I appreciate the excitement and national pride the sport brings. Our national team earns admiration, and that shared enthusiasm is part of what makes being Cameroonian special. It’s enough to pack a bag and head home to celebrate with everyone.

These highlights—flavorful food, bilingual culture, breathtaking landscapes, daily contact with nature, great places to visit, and spirited football—are just a few reasons why I would choose Cameroon again and again. It’s a country full of warmth, variety and unmistakable charm.
