Yesterday: A Memoir of Loss, Love, and Second Chances

Yesterday was quite a day. I woke up with big plans to film several videos for my YouTube channel, but first I needed breakfast and a quick shopping run. After my morning routine—prayers, making the bed, changing out of pajamas and brushing my teeth—I went downstairs to the kitchen for breakfast.

While I ate, I scrolled through my phone looking for home furniture ideas since we recently moved and the house is still sparsely furnished. Once I finished breakfast I headed out to run errands. My first stop was Walmart, where I returned an item I no longer needed and picked up fresh herbs to plant: basil and mint. I was excited about having them at home to harvest for recipes and food styling.

Next I went to Aldi. To my surprise, they had a whole selection of home items in my new favorite color, turquoise. I bought the groceries I needed and also some organizational pieces I couldn’t resist: a three-drawer unit, foldable bins, stackable racks and baskets—everything in turquoise. I kept checking my shopping list in the notes app to make sure I didn’t miss any ingredients I’d need for upcoming cooking videos.

After browsing the aisles and adding lots of fruits and vegetables to a full cart, I realized Aldi didn’t carry everything I needed, so I decided to head back to Walmart. On the way I made a brief stop at Dollar Tree and picked up a few essentials and some dollar glasses.

When I returned to the Walmart parking lot and began to slowly park, I accidentally grazed another car. It was a tiny impact—my first time ever hitting someone else’s vehicle. I parked, got out, and inspected the other car. There were two silvery lines near the bumper. The other driver was already taking pictures and confirmed that my car had caused the marks.

I apologized and asked how we could resolve it. I called Mr. N to explain what had happened and then spoke with the woman again. She said the paint would need touching up and estimated the cost at $300, then asked what I could offer. After talking with Mr. N, I handed her my phone so they could discuss options. She agreed to accept $100 as compensation for the damage.

Accident

The photo has a lot of reflections, but you can see two thin lines just under the bumper on the right side. I accompanied her to the nearest ATM, withdrew $100 and gave it to her, which she accepted. After that incident I lost interest in continuing my Walmart shopping and drove straight home, feeling disappointed.

By the time I got home I was tired and very hungry. I sliced into a watermelon and felt instantly refreshed—the fruit felt like real food therapy. Pregnancy fatigue made me want to nap, but I still had dinner to prepare and needed to assemble and organize the items I’d bought. With the girls’ help I assembled the three-drawer unit and placed it in their room to hold underwear—one drawer for each girl.

In the kitchen I prepared jollof rice and grilled chicken, then cleaned up and got the girls ready for bed. Despite the frustrating incident earlier in the day and missing my filming schedule, I was grateful I could still take care of the family and get the essentials done. The accident could have been worse, and I chose to be thankful and trust that everything happened for a reason.

Tomorrow I hope to shoot several episodes for the YouTube channel. Thanks for reading.
