This seasoning blend gives the fish a well-rounded flavor. Tilapia’s mild taste makes it ideal for absorbing spices, so even people who aren’t big fish fans tend to enjoy it.

Keeping a selection of dried herbs and spices on hand makes quick cooking much easier.

Always pat the fillets dry with paper towels before searing to help create a golden crust.

How to Make Pan Seared Tilapia

Make this dish in two easy steps:

Step 1. Rub the seasonings over both sides of the fillets, making sure the spices reach all surfaces. There’s no need to marinate ahead of time.

Step 2. Heat one tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat (cast iron works best but nonstick is fine). When the oil is hot, add two fillets and cook for about 3–4 minutes per side, until the fish flakes easily with a fork and is golden brown. Repeat with the remaining fillets and the remaining oil. Garnish with chopped parsley and serve with lime wedges for squeezing over the fish.

  • Season the fillets and bake them in a shallow dish instead of pan-searing.
  • Try air-frying the seasoned tilapia for a lighter crisp.
  • Squeeze fresh lemon or lime juice over the fillets just before serving or top with lemon slices.
  • Swap the spice blend for Cajun seasoning, chili powder, or Italian seasoning for a different flavor profile.
